Born on February 21st, Nina Simone was a great singer, pianist, and composer. Daughter of Methodist pastors, Nina had to adopt her stage name so she could sing in cabarets in the USA hidden from her parents, where the Blues style was the highlight. Possessing vocal versatility ranging from gospel, soul, jazz, and blues to folk, she captured the attention of great artists such as George Harrison and Bob Dylan, just to name a few.

Nina Simone, nascida aos 21 de fevereiro, foi uma grande cantora, pianista e compositora. Filha de pastores metodistas, Nina teve de adoptar o nome artístico para que pudesse cantar nos cabarés dos EUA escondida de seus pais, onde o estilo Blues era o destaque. Detentora de uma versatilidade vocal desde o gospel, soul, jazz, blues ao folk, captou a atenção de grandes artistas como é o caso do George Harrison e Bob Dylan, só para citar alguns.

She also stood out for being black and supporting all types of fight against racism, which is why she was the target of persecution. In the 50s, she joined the Juilliard School, in New York, being one of the first black women to do so. She composed and performed the song “Mississippi Goddamn”, marking his activism at the time, and the song portrays the murder of four black children in a church in Birmingham in 1953. Her activism was so impactful that she even sang at the pacifist and revolutionary Martin Luther King's funeral. She was a brilliant interpreter and a divine composer, that played the piano with dedication and perfection.

Igualmente se destacou por ser negra e dar a cara a todo tipo de luta contra o racismo, sendo por isso alvo de perseguições. Na década de 50, ingressou na Juilliard School, em Nova Iorque, sendo uma das primeiras mulheres negras com este feito. Compôs e interpretou a canção “Mississipi Goddamn”, tendo marcado o activismo na época, e a música retrata o assassinato de quatro crianças negras numa igreja em Birmingham em 1953. Seu activismo era impactante de tal forma que chegou a cantar no velório do pacisfista e revolucionário Martin Luther King. Era uma intérprete brilhante, compositora divinal e tocava piano com entrega e perfeição.

Nina was a civil rights activist who grew up absolutely committed to changing the world around her. In her first recital, at the age of 11, she asked her parents to be moved from the last row of the audience to closer to the stage, as she would not play without seeing them, which went against the rules of the time, as that one that black people was destined for the last seats. At 17, Nina was not accepted into the Curtis Institute of Music, a classical music school, and no one knew she was rejected because she was black. But it wasn't just racism that changed Nina Simone's life, as she was married to a police officer and was once beaten by him.

Nina foi uma ativista dos direitos civis que cresceu absolutamente comprometida em mudar o mundo ao seu redor. Em seu primeiro recital, aos 11 anos, pediu aos pais que fossem transferidos da última fila do público para mais perto do palco, pois não tocaria sem vê-los, o que contrariava as regras da época, como a de que os negros estavam destinados aos últimos assentos. Aos 17 anos, Nina não foi aceita no Curtis Institute of Music, uma escola de música clássica, e ninguém sabia que ela foi rejeitada por ser negra. Mas não foi só o racismo que mudou a vida de Nina Simone, já que foi casada com um policial e foi espancada por este certa vez.

Nina Simone was a victim of prejudice and domestic violence, and all of this was heard, seen, and felt when she played the piano. The singer has incredible instrumental talent and stands out for her voice, musical intelligence, and the power of her own or performed songs. Activism has always been a mark of her personality and a constant in her lyrics. “Four Women” follows the lives of different women of different races, with different life stories – some more painful than others – but they have no voice, and Nina is no exception. Ain't Go No/I Got Life is a symbol of struggle and resistance. Love, slavery, being a woman, resistance, perseverance. All of this is sung in a deep voice.

Nina Simone foi vítima de preconceito, violência doméstica, e tudo isso foi ouvido, visto e sentido quando ela tocava piano. A cantora possui um talento instrumental incrível e se destaca pela voz e inteligência musical e pela potência de músicas próprias ou executadas. Whether composing or acting, Nina speaks the truth. Her truth. There is nothing more beautiful or more painful than this: being aligned with what you truly believe. Nina is not only a great person who fought against a racist and sexist world, but above all, she sings from the heart and with authenticity about everything she has experienced. Anyone who listens carefully is transported to the world of this wonderful singer and believes in her pain. A singer is a storyteller and an actor, and must make whoever listens to them believe in what they sings. Few people had – or have – Nina Simone's ability to draw us into her world and make us live and suffer with her
