Maria Firmina dos Reis

Considered the first Brazilian novelist, Maria Firmina dos Reis was born in São Luís, Maranhão, and was daughter of a black father and a white mother. Due to her father's condition, during the era of slavery, the girl was registered under the name of an illegitimate father and grew up in the house of an aunt, from her mother's family, which allowed her to have some education.

Considerada a primeira romancista brasileira, Maria Firmina dos Reis nasceu em São Luís, Maranhão, filha de pai negro e mãe branca. Devido à condição do pai, durante a época da escravidão, a menina foi registrada com o nome de pai ilegítimo e cresceu na casa de uma tia, da família da mãe, o que lhe permitiu ter alguma educação.

At the age of 22, she passed a competition to become a teacher in the city. And then, she already took an anti-slavery position. Her first book, Úrsula, was released twelve years later, when Maria already enjoyed some prestige as a teacher. It was the first novel published by a woman in the country, and also the first anti-slavery one.

Aos 22 anos, passou em um concurso para ser professora na cidade. E então, ela já assumiu uma posição antiescravista. Seu primeiro livro, Úrsula, foi lançado doze anos depois, quando Maria já gozava de algum prestígio como professora. Foi o primeiro romance publicado por uma mulher no país e também o primeiro antiescravista.

She went on to publish more short stories and a book of poems and founded a free mixed school to serve the region's poor (a scandal at the time), but over time it was forgotten, and later recovered through the research of a historian from Paraíba in the 1960s.

Passou a publicar mais contos e um livro de poemas e fundou uma escola mista gratuita para atender os pobres da região (um escândalo na época), mas com o tempo foi esquecida e posteriormente recuperada através da pesquisa de um historiador paraibano na década de 1960.
