Erika Hilton

Born in Franco da Rocha in 1992, she grew up on the outskirts of Francisco Morato, São Paulo, where she lived until she was 14, when she went to live in Itu with her evangelical piblings who sent her to church to be “cured” of transsexuality.

Nascida em Franco da Rocha em 1992, cresceu na periferia de Francisco Morato, São Paulo, onde viveu até os 14, quando foi viver em Itu com seus tios evangélicos que a enviaram à igreja para ser “curada” da transexualidade.

At the age of 15, she was expelled from home, forced to resort to prostitution, and only recovered her relationship with her mother after 6 years when she returned to live with her and completed her studies.

Aos 15 anos foi expulsa de casa, sendo obrigada a recorrer a prostituição, e só recuperou a relação com sua mãe após 6 anos quando voltou a morar com ela e concluiu seus estudos.

Érika joined the student movement while studying pedagogy and gerontology at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), and gained notoriety in 2015 after a clash with a bus company that refused to print her social name on her ticket.

Érika juntou se ao movimento estudantil enquanto cursava pedagogia e gerontologia na Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar), e ganhou notoriedade em 2015 após um embate com uma empresa de ônibus que se recusou a imprimir seu nome social em sua passagem.

Still in 2015, she became a Human Rights activist and in favor of the black population and the LGBTQIAP+ community, in the same year she joined the Socialism and Freedom Party (PSOL) where she ran for councilor of Itu in 2016. In 2018 she was elected in a collective mandate on the Activist Bench as state co-deputy in the city of São Paulo, becoming the most voted for the position, with more than 50 thousand votes.

Ainda em 2015 tornou se ativista dos Direitos Humanos e a favor da população negra e da comunidade LGBTQIAP+, no mesmo ano filiou se ao Partido Socialismo e Liberdade (PSOL) onde concorreu a vereadora de Itu em 2016. No ano de 2018 foi eleita em mandado coletivo na Bancada Ativista como co-deputada estadual na cidade de São Paulo, tornando se a mais votada para o cargo, com mais de 50 mil votos.

In 2021, she became the only Brazilian politician in the ranking of the 100 most influential afro-descendant people in the world, she was also elected one of the 20 leaders of the new generation by Time Magazine, and was one of the 5 global activists awarded for her fight in defense of the LGBTQIAP+ community by the MRC European Music Awards. In the 2022 elections, she was elected federal deputy with 256,903 votes, being the first black and trans federal deputy in the history of Brazil.

Em 2021, se tornou a única política brasileira no ranking das 100 pessoas afrodescendentes mais influentes do mundo, também foi eleita uma das 20 líderes da nova geração pela Revista Time e foi uma das 5 ativistas globais premiadas pela luta na defesa da comunidade LGBTQIAP+ pelo MRC European Music Awards. Nas eleições de 2022, foi eleita deputada federal com 256.903 de votos, sendo a primeira deputada federal negra e trans na história do Brasil.

The federal deputy prefers to be identified as a transvestite and not as a transgender or transsexual woman, and alongside her fellow activist Indianarae Siqueira, she created the term transvestigender, with the aim of covering all gender identities.

A deputada federal prefere ser identificada como travesti e não como uma mulher transgênero ou transexual, e ao lado da também ativista Indianarae Siqueira, concebeu o termo transvestigênere, com o intuito de abranger todas as identidades de gênero.

Being active not only in the world of politics, Erika is also breaking paradigms in the world of fashion, where she participated in São Paulo Fashion Week (SPFW). These are two different scenarios, but they can go together. As a young and influential person, she is able to show that political debate can be inserted in any context, including fashion, reaching other groups in a much lighter way.

Atuante não só no mundo da política, Erika, está quebrando paradigmas também no mundo da moda, onde participou da São Paulo Fashion Week SPFW. São dois cenários diferentes, mas que podem caminhar juntos. Sendo uma pessoa jovem e influente, ela é capaz de mostrar que o debate político pode ser inserido em qualquer contexto, inclusive na moda, atingindo outros grupos de uma maneira muito mais leve.
