Beatriz Nascimento

Northeastern, born in Aracajú - Sergipe, on July 17th, 1942, she migrated to the southeast of the country with her family searching for a better life in 1949, Maria Beatriz Nascimento, given name, was a historian, researcher, activist, screenwriter, and poet. She was recognized for her in-depth study of quilombos in Brazil.

Nordestina, nascida em Aracajú - Sergipe, em 17 de Julho de 1942, tendo migrado para o sudeste do país junto com sua família em busca de melhoria de vida em 1949, Maria Beatriz Nascimento, nome de batismo, foi historiadora, pesquisadora, ativista, roteirista e poeta. Foi reconhecida pelo seu estudo aprofundado sobre os quilombos no Brasil.

Among her works, such as books, essays, and articles, we can highlight the following titles: "The black Man Seen by Himself", "For a History of the Black Man", "Kilombo and Community Memory", "The Concept of Quilombo and Black Cultural Resistance " among others.

Dentre suas obras, como livros, ensaios e artigos destacam-se os livros "O negro visto por ele mesmo", "Por uma história do homem negro", "Kilombo e Memória Comunitária", "O Conceito de Quilombo e a Resistência Cultural Negra" e etc.

She was one of the creators of the André Rebouças Working Group, in 1974 at the Fluminense Federal University that discussed racial issues and one of the pioneers in studies on quilombos. In 1981 she published the results of her research under the title “Alternative Systems Organized by Black People: from Quilombos to Favelas”.

Foi uma das criadoras do grupo do Grupo de Trabalho André Rebouças, em 1974 na Universidade Federal Fluminense que discutia questões raciais e uma das pioneiras nos estudos sobre quilombos. Em 1981 divulgou os resultados de sua pesquisas sob o título “Sistemas Alternativos Organizados pelos Negros: dos Quilombos às Favelas”.

Considered one of the most important intellectuals for black feminism in Brazil, she refused to tell the Brazilian history told by white people. And for a long time, she was ignored in intellectual and academic circuits.

Considerada uma das intelectuais mais importantes para o feminismo negro no Brasil, se recusou a contar a história brasileira que os brancos contam. E por muito tempo foi ignorada circuitos intelectuais e acadêmicos.

She participated in the return of organized social movements at the end of the military dictatorship, even being part of the Black Movement Against Racial Discrimination (MNUCDR), founded in 1978, and which later became MNU (Unified Black Movement).

Participou do retorno dos movimentos sociais organizados, ao final da ditadura militar, inclusive junto ao Movimento Negro Contra a Discriminação Racial (MNUCDR), fundado em 1978, e que mais tarde se transforma em MNU (Movimento Negro Unificado).

In 1995, at the age of 52, she was shot to death by the ex-partner of a friend who was experiencing domestic violence, whom she welcomed and encouraged to break up with her abuser.

Em 1995, com 52 anos, foi assassinada a tiros, pelo ex-companheiro de uma amiga que vivenciava violência doméstica, que ela acolheu e incentivou ao rompimento com o abusador.

On March 17th, 2022, the University Council (CUV) of the Fluminense Federal University granted her the title Honoris Causa to Beatriz Nascimento. She is the first black woman to receive the title of Doctor Honoris Causa (post-mortem).

Em 17 de Março de 2022, o Conselho Universitário (CUV) da Universidade Federal Fluminense aprovou a concessão do título Honoris Causa a Beatriz Nascimento. É a primeira mulher negra a receber o título de Doutora Honoris Causa (post-mortem).

On October 31st, 2023, Law 14.712 was sanctioned by President Lula and published in the Official Gazette of the Union, which inscribes the name of Beatriz Nascimento in the Book of Heroes of the Fatherland.

Em 31 de Outubro de 2023, foi sancionada a Lei 14.712 pelo Presidente Lula e publicada no Diário Oficial da União, que inscreve o nome de Beatriz Nascimento no Livro dos Heróis e Heroínas da Pátria.
